Who We Are - What We Do

We are a group of impassioned community members employing art and activism as business to turn a social profit.

Here at Compassionate Farm Project we take a radical approach to business, morphing traditional for-profit, non-profit, and cooperative models into a hybrid that we are using to create the greatest benefit for ourselves as worker-owners, our society, and our greater human community.

In light of a series of recent raids by state and local law enforcement against legal medical marijuana farms we are using our skills as artists and activists to create beautiful, affordable, and sustainably-produced art products including the 2010 Cannabis Goddess Calendar, the 2010 Cannabis Gods Calendar, and a series of prints, stationary, and clothing. The profits from the sale of these products will fund our non-profit work via Compassionate Farm Foundation.

The Compassionate Farm Foundation functions dually as a benefactor of other non-profits and as a micro-finance institution. We recognize that many legal farmers have recently lost their livelihoods to these raids in spite of their full compliance with state law. The unfortunate fact remains that the gray areas that still exist in medical marijuana legislation create a space of legal ambiguity in which both law enforcement and farmers are caught. This means that beyond losing their entire livelihood, they face the challenge of legal fees to defend themselves in court and are left with little or nothing to pay their mortgages and feed their families. The Compassionate Farm Foundation therefore offers legal farmers short-term, low-interest hardship loans to temporarily assist with the cost of lawyers and basic living costs.

We take the stand for our community that the rights of patients, farmers, and collectives be respected and upheld and we are committed to furthering the necessary reform of existing legislation to give clarity and protection where it is currently lacking.

We do this out of love and humble responsibility for our community, for our families, and for our country.

3D Phantograms

As you've been hearing about in our recent updates, the 2010 Cannabis Goddess & Gods Calendars are being shot not only in the traditional 2-dimensional format, but also in 3D! What does this mean? It means that in just a few weeks time you'll have a calendar hanging on your wall with 3D glasses attached to it. The 3D format we've chosen to work in is known as a phantogram.

Simple phantograms of still-life objects are, in fact, quite simple to produce given the proper equipment and training. When you're talking live subjects such as nude, body-painted, gorgeous Cannabis Gods and Goddesses, however, the production of phantograms gets near impossible even for veteran 3D photographers.

Thankfully we have the honor and pleasure of working with one of the best modern producers of phantograms. Barry Rothstein has self-published three 3D photography books and has since published one and contracted for another with Chronicle Books. Below is the cover of his first book, Phantograms from Nature, published in 2005.
